On June 13, 2026, the Mekong Institute – Can Tho University, in collaboration with the Mekong Delta Women's Development Center and the People's Committee of Ninh Quoi Commune, organized a consultation meeting for the project "Women-led green livelihood transformation in the acid sulphate soil area of the Mekong Delta – Ninh Quoi commune, Ca Mau Province". The project is funded by the "Promoting Women-Led Green Transformation Initiatives" (PWG) project. The PWG project is a component of the "Women-Led Green Partnership Program," funded by the European Union and implemented by Oxfam in Vietnam.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the People's Committee of Ninh Quoi Commune, the Ninh Quoi Commune Women's Union, the Ap Vam Women's Group, as well as collaborative groups and cooperatives within Ninh Quoi commune. The consultation meeting aimed to provide an overview of the project's activities, presenting in detail its objectives, expected results, and key performance indicators.
During the consultation, delegates and representatives of local women's groups shared insights into current household livelihood models, which include rice cultivation, livestock husbandry (pigs, chickens, ducks), vegetable farming, eel practice, and water hyacinth weaving. Through the discussions, the project team identified major challenges faced in actual local production, such as a lack of capital, freshwater shortages, disease outbreaks, high costs of agricultural inputs, low prices of agricultural products, and livestock waste management.
To address these challenges, project experts introduced circular solutions into production. Based on consensus and ranking exercise, the participants agreed to conduct identified trainings such as:
- Household and agricultural by-product waste management via composting technology.
- Rice cultivation by application of circular principles and low-carbon practices.
- Pig farming integrated with biogas technique.
- Community health management training.
- Training on rainwater harvesting and water treatment for domestic use.
- Training on vegetable farming.
The project is expected to successfully demonstrate green livelihood models in Ninh Quoi commune, thereby enhancing the role of women in climate change response and promoting sustainable development in the Mekong Delta.
